Flyboy and flygirl are one of Hebru Brantley's most iconic characters. With international
recognition, they have managed to generate a special affection in China. So when ⻜ 男孩
和 ⻜ 女孩 漫画 ⻜ 男孩 和 ⻜ 女孩 漫画 (Flyboy and Flygirl Comic) asked us to reimagine
their characters we took a dive!

As proof of concept we decided to recreate a scene that could be reused several times
throughout the life of the comic, as a cost saving measure to quickly illustrate
commercials. Once approved, we simplified Flyboy by using a polygonal base and taking
advantage of draping fabrics to create a sensation of movement. We updated the
proportions of the character to have better mobility and an aesthetically balanced design.
We employed line art to delimit the shapes, and lights and shadows with little detail as a
way to convey depth.

For the second phase we empowered the female character with a story arc where Flygirl
reaches the moon. Continuing with the geometric simplification and updated proportions
we allowed ourselves to use a gradient of colours with high contrast variations, simplifying
the composition's backgrounds and shifting all the information into the character’s design.

Finally, during the third phase we decided to interpret the characters as fan-arts. With the
idea of being able to reach all kinds of audiences, creating a sense of identity and
belonging between the readers and the characters. We chose to decontextualise Flyboy
and Flygirl, allowing the reader's particular reality to act as a looking glass, without
affecting the main concept of the beloved characters.
